The vintage drag racing community is home to some of the most interesting, “out of the box” people and stories. There is no concrete article header or title that would suit the coverage of such fantastic behind the scenes tid bits so I chose to revamp Fuel Finds to be truly representative of the sport as a whole. This month’s Fuel Find is Mad Mike Patterson’s Nitro Rub! Not only is Mad Mike a nitro front engine dragster owner and tuner he is a phenomenal cook and engine builder. Go figure! I present to you the real story behind the maker of Nitro Rub and Master Engine Machinist.

Mike Patterson has been a permanent fixture in the West Coast Drag Racing scene and thanks to his infamous Saturday Pit BBQ’s and cookouts he was urged to share his secret…NITRO RUB!

Mad Mike lives in a small Northern Nevada agricultural town with three athletic sons involved in every type of sport. Because of his extensive involvement with his family Mike was often called upon to provide team barbeques for various fund raisers. Over the years he has perfected a dry rub originally designed for his specialty – tri-tip roast. For several years he and his crew have been featured at major Boys and Girls Club fundraisers serving thousands of his famous BBQ tri-tip roast sandwiches.

Out at the track where Mike campaigns his own Top Fuel Front Engine Dragster along with partner Bill Bothello, Mike’s fame and rub reputation have spread! After a long day at the digs Mike’s crew was always too tired to drive to a restaurant. A barbeque out at the track was the answer and Mad Mike’s tri-tip roast was the feature. Being a generous man, Mad Mike wouldn’t limit the lucky recipients to his own crew, but would provide great sandwiches to any grease-stained drag racer that followed his/her nose to Mad Mike’s pit.
