Gasser Reunion
Story and photos by David W. Miller
I'm sure everyone has certain events they love to attend and wouldn't miss for the world. For me one of those is the Mid - American Willys Club, Gasser Reunion at Thompson Raceway Park in Thompson, Ohio. If you love gassers or just love vintage drag racing period, this is an event you won't want to miss. This years Gasser Reunion will be held on May 30th though June 1st. at TRP.... and to to say I'm looking forward to it would be an understatement.
The Gasser Reunion brings in gasser's from all over the Mid - West, Eastern Sea Board, Canada and even as far away as Texas. Every size, shape and make of gasser is on the grounds ready to do battle on the quarter mile. Some of these racers only get to see each other once a year and that leads to some annual grudge matches. For those old enough to remember the Gasser Wars and Match Racing it brings back found memories and gives the younger fans a taste of the past. Although the reunion is focused on gassers there are also Super Stockers , Funny Cars and Front Engine Dragsters as well, giving you the full flavor of drag racing in the '60's. Thats not even mentioning the track itself. Thompson Raceway Park is the oldest dragstrip in Ohio. Having been in action since 1958, it's seen more than it's share of gasser action and although there has been improvements since '58 it still retains it's since of history. You can't beat a vintage track for a vintage event like this one.
Having said all that......it gets even better. Ask anyone who has gone to the Gasser Reunion and they are likely to tell you they got to meet one of their favorite driver's from the '60's. Legendary racers like "Ohio George" Montgomery, "Big John" Mazmanian and "Bones" Balogh....or how about the S&S team of Gene Altizer, "Pork" Zartman, Dave Hales, Fred Bear and K.S. Pittman? Then there's Chuck Finders, Dave Koffel and Barbara Hamilton and on and on. Even "The Camfather" Ed Iskenderian has been in attendance. These are the people who paved the way down the 1320 foe the rest of us to enjoy.
One thing I'm looking forward to this year is getting to see the original Stone, Woods and Cook Willys along side of Ken McIntyre's "Big John" Mazmanian Willys clone. As some of you may know "Big John" built the car with Ken. So, it's as close to the real deal as you are going to get. I'm also looking forward to seeing all my gasser buddies. If you attend the Gasser Reunion more than once...it will be a reunion for you as well.
